Wizkid (born 16 July 1990) is a Nigerian singer and songwriter who goes by the stage name Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun. At the age of 11, he began recording music and published a joint CD with the Glorious Five (5), a group he and a few of his church buddies founded. Banky W’s Empire Mates Entertainment signed Wizkid to a record deal in 2009. (E.M.E). After the release of “Holla at Your Boy,” the lead single from his debut studio album, Superstar (2011), which also included the singles “Tease Me/Bad Guys” and “Don’t Dull,” he rocketed to prominence.

Ayo, his self-titled second studio album, was released in September 2014. Six singles were released to promote the album, including “Jaiye Jaiye.” After his contract with E.M.E expired, Wizkid left. In Wizkid rose to international prominence in 2016 as a result of his collaboration with Drake on the hit single “One Dance,” which topped the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States and 14 other countries. Wizkid became the first Afrobeats artist to be listed in the Guinness Book of World Records after the song broke multiple records. He signed a multi-album deal with RCA Records in March 2017, and his third studio album, Sounds from the Other Side, was released later that year. Five singles were released to promote the album, including Drake’s “Come Closer.”

In 2018, he was featured on Normani and Calvin Harris’ single “Checklist,” which went to number one on the Billboard World Digital Song Sales chart. He was included on Beyoncé’s project The Lion King: The Musical the following year. On the tune “Brown Skin Girl,” which also went to number one on the World Digital Song Sales list and earned him a Grammy Award for Best Music Video, he collaborated with The Gift. Made in Lagos, his fourth album, was released in October 2020, and it was a commercial and critical triumph, reaching number one on the Billboard World Album Chart The album features the Tems-assisted track “Essence,” which became the first Nigerian song to appear on the Billboard Hot 100[8] and reached the top ten after a Justin Bieber remix. Wizkid’s fifth studio album, More Love Less Ego, is due out in 2022.

Wizkid had over 3.4 billion Spotify streams by February 2021, making him the most-streamed Nigerian musician of all time.

1990–2010: Beginnings of a life and a career

Wizkid was born Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun in Surulere, Lagos, on July 16, 1990.

He was raised in a mixed-faith family with twelve female siblings. His father is an Islamist and his mother is a Pentecostal Christian. Wizkid was a student at Ijebu Ode Grammar School.  He listened to King Sunny Ade, Fela Kuti, and Bob Marley as a child.  He stated in a 2012 radio interview with Tim Westwood that “his father has three wives.”  In a separate interview with Factory 78 TV’s Adesope, Wizkid said that he founded the Glorious Five with a couple of his church buddies.  Before disbanding, they managed to release an album. Until 2006, Wizkid went by the stage name Lil Prinz. Later, he met OJB Jezreel, a record producer who put a year’s worth of recording on hold for him.  He saw 2 Face Idibia record tracks for his Grass 2 Grace album while frequenting OJB’s Point Beat Studios. He was also there during Sound Sultan’s debut album Jagbajantis’ recording sessions.  One of the people that mentored and guided him when he was 15 years old was Naeto C. Empire Mates Entertainment signed Wizkid to a record deal in 2009. “Omoge You Too Much,” a song from Banky W.’s The W Experience album, was co-written by him. While honing his skill, he collaborated with Naeto C, Ikechukwu, and M.I. He dropped out of Lagos State University in mid-2009 (LASU). Later, he enrolled in Lead City University, but dropped out after a year.

Wizkid began recording his debut studio album Superstar in 2009, and it was released in 2010.  On January 2, 2010, he released “Holla at Your Boy” as the album’s lead single. [19] He won the Next Rated award at The Headies 2011 for the song, which was nominated for Best Pop Single. In addition to receiving the honor, the organizers presented him with a 2012 Hyundai Sonata. At the 2011 Channel O Music Video Awards, this music video was nominated for Most Gifted Newcomer Video.

The album’s second single, “Tease Me/Bad Guys,” was released on April 2, 2010. It was released as a freestyle rap at first. The album’s third single, “Don’t Dull,” was released on December 6, 2010. Superstar was recorded in Yoruba and English. It was made public.

Empire Mates Entertainment released it on June 12th, 2011. Afrobeats, R&B, dancehall, and reggae are all represented on the album. Wizkid worked with record producers including as E-Kelly, Jay Sleek, Shizzi, DJ Klem, Masterkraft, Q-Beats, and Samklef on Superstar. Banky W., Skales, D’Prince, and Wande Coal all make cameos on the album. It was supposed to be released on February 14, 2011, however it was postponed. [24] Wizkid held an album launch party at the Eko Hotel & Suites’ Expo Hall on June 12, 2011. Banky W, Skales, 2face Idibia, Samklef, Wande Coal, D’Prince, Olamide, eLDee, Jesse Jagz, Ice Prince, Lynxxx, and Seyi Shay performed at the launch party.  At the 2012 Nigerian Music Awards, Superstar won Best Album of the Year.
